Buy smart: Beyond the manufacturer

We often get asked why so many owners and captains choose to work with a specialist when it comes to toy outfitting, rather than going directly to individual manufacturers.

At the heart of it, it comes down to perspective. A manufacturer will always promote their own product (understandably), but a specialist looks at the bigger picture. The focus is on what actually works best for the yacht, how it will be used, and where the budget is best spent across a range of options.

What surprises a lot of people is that this expertise doesn’t usually come at an added cost. In many cases, specialists are able to secure better pricing than going direct, simply through long-standing relationships and volume purchasing. So you’re getting broader advice and, quite often, a better deal at the same time.

There’s also the practical side of things. Anyone who’s been through a tender or toy purchase knows it’s never just about picking an item. There’s negotiation, shipping, installation, compliance, crew training… and that’s before you even get into global logistics and customs. Having someone manage all of that removes a huge amount of pressure and saves a lot of time.

Shipping in particular can get complicated quickly, especially when you’re dealing with remote locations or tricky import/export requirements. Structuring purchases correctly, handling ex-VAT where possible, and making sure everything arrives where it should, when it should, is a job in itself.

For more complex or custom projects, having proper project management in place makes a real difference too. Keeping timelines on track, maintaining quality, and ensuring everyone involved is aligned isn’t always straightforward without someone overseeing the whole process.

Then there’s after-sales support, which is often overlooked until something goes wrong. Being able to organise repairs or replacements wherever the yacht happens to be, without sending equipment back to origin or dealing with regional limitations, is a major advantage.

Ultimately, it comes down to simplicity and risk. Instead of juggling multiple suppliers, there’s one point of contact managing everything from start to finish.

Buying direct absolutely still has its place, especially for simple, one-off purchases where the requirements are crystal clear. But as soon as things get more involved, having a specialist involved tends to make life a lot easier… and often more cost-effective too.
